The Course

Aldwark Manor was commissioned in 1865 by Lord Walsingham as a wedding present for his eldest daughter. The original Manor forms the basis of what is now the Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa Hotel which sits in the picturesque Vale of York surrounded by the Aldwark Manor Golf Course.

The golf course is a 6187 yard par 72 test of skill and accuracy. It's an easy walking parkland layout split by the meandering River Ure which is crossed by a footbridge. There are many interesting features including mature trees, water hazards and of course the River Ure which serve to provide some unique and challenging holes.

The early holes, set in the hotel grounds, are relatively short but they are tight. Holes 5 to 13 are reached by crossing the River Ure and whilst there is a little more room on this side of the river the need for accuracy is maintained by clever use of natural features such as the river and a beck. Holes 14 to 18 are reached by crossing back over the river and provide a very varied and challenging finish to a round.

In short, it's a lovely place to play golf!

Some course highlights;

Hole 1: 170 yard par 3 with out of bounds to the left, trees to the right and a large tree protecting the left half of the small green. Not your average starting hole and you can throw shots away if you are not on your game straight away.

Hole 7: Testing 461 yd par 4 which bends slightly to the left following the curve of the river.

Hole 10: 471 yd par 5 with a pond to the front of the green. You can get there safely in 3 or hit a good drive and decide whether to gamble on clearing the pond with your second.

Hole 14: 489 yd par 5 with the river to the right, trees to the left and an elevated green tucked away behind more trees. It's positional play and accuracy that usually pay dividends. A great hole !

Hole 17: 515 yard par 5 where an accurate drive over a ditch and between trees is essential.

Hole 18: This 159 yard par 3 is a beautiful but challenging hole to finish with. The tee shot is played over a cascading water feature to a split level green set amongst mature trees with out of bounds to the left. A par here is a great way to finish your round !.
